Rowena Tam is a highly experienced English educator in Hong Kong with over 30 years of ESL teaching experience and the Chairlady of the Hong Kong English Teachers' Support Association. Her unique teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in her own journey as a struggling learner.
Why did Rowena Tam create the Double R Amalgam Method?
Ms. Tam's story is one of personal transformation. As a young student, she struggled to learn English. She could not use the method taught by her English teacher because she always learned in the "Chinese way," leading her to hate English until she was 17 years old.
Her turning point came when she joined an exchange program and was forced to use English in daily life. Realizing that English and Chinese are fundamentally different languages, she decided to study the language entirely on her own. Within just six months, she upgraded her own abilities to reach the distinction standard.
This profound breakthrough revealed that her past failures were not due to a lack of ability, but because she had been using the wrong method. This realization led her to develop her own "conversion method"—which later became the Double R Amalgam (英语整合法). Today, this methodology is the foundation of her highly effective teaching, helping countless students overcome the exact same hurdles she once faced.
